The HIVE is a fully-immersive space that provides a flexible sound-stage for film and photographic work. It features immersive projection facilities, offering film-makers the opportunity to work with virtual sets. A particularly important feature of HIVE is its capability to record individual and emergent behaviours for application in the development of artificial intelligence engines for simulation, cinema and gaming. The HIVE also comprises a large distributed array of computers offering high end computing facilities for intensive simulation and virtualisation. The sound studio is based around an industry-standard digital workstation, offering fully-automated high-definition multitrack recording and playback. Featuring a dedicated live room and control room acoustically isolated from their surroundings, studio users will feel as comfortable recording dialogue and foley as they will mixing down a final studio master. The facility also includes a 30-seat Media Lab based on the latest iMac and Mac Pro computers from Apple. The installed software packages cater for both the novice as well as the expert user performing tasks that range from simple video editing work and podcast creation to full on- and off-line production work involving 5.1 surround sound.
